VCU TRiO Educational Opportunity Center

The Educational Opportunity Center at Virginia Commonwealth University, which is funded by the U.S. Department of Education, helps low-income, potential first-generation college students and military veterans enroll in high school equivalency and/or postsecondary programs.

The center is open to all eligible individuals who live in the city of Richmond or eastern Henrico County. Review the eligibility requirements.


Academic counseling

  • High school equivalency pre-testing
  • Individualized personal, academic and career counseling
  • Referrals to adult education centers for HSE assistance
  • HSE test payment assistance (subject to funds availability)
  • Referrals to local agencies with services to assist nontraditional students

Enrollment counseling

  • Assistance identifying appropriate college/university, vocational school or career-specific programs
  • College transfer advising
  • Assistance completing applications for admissions and enrollment
  • Academic advising

Financial aid counseling

  • Assistance completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid
  • Assistance completing college/school financial aid verification forms
  • Scholarship information
  • Financial literacy and loan counseling

Career exploration

  • Information regarding the job market, career projections and training
  • Advice on career assessments that match interests and abilities with appropriate training

Computer access

  • Computer lab access for general education-related use
